Three years ago, a friend and I created Cincinnati Spark with one simple goal: to encourage girls to continue playing multiple sports for as long as they want to, without feeling pressure to specialize at such a young age.
We both played three sports in high school and one sport in college, and we believe the lessons learned through athletics shaped who we became as adults. Discipline, organization, sportsmanship, resilience, adversity, teamwork, and relationships extend far beyond the court.
The physical, social, and mental benefits of playing multiple sports are well documented, but unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult for athletes to compete in more than one sport at a high level. Early specialization continues to grow, and with it comes added pressure, burnout, and comparison.
Conversations centered around “making the high school team,” “earning a college scholarship,” or “playing professionally” often miss the bigger picture. The value of sports is much larger than the final destination.
Today’s girls are growing up in a completely different environment than we did. Social media and constant access have created a world where comparison is unavoidable and competition feels amplified at every level. Because of that, helping young athletes build confidence in themselves matters now more than ever.
Our goal with Spark has never been just about basketball. It has always been about creating an environment where girls can compete, grow, support one another, and continue developing into confident young women — both in sports and in life.
